    Prague Castle in detail

When you visit Prague Castle, you may be surprised by the size of this originally medieval fortress, as it is the largest castle complex currently used in the world as the seat of the President and the representative premises of the Czech Republic, and with its dimensions of 570 m in length and 128 m in width, it is also proudly inscribed in the Guinness Book of Records. It was built as the residence of Czech princes, later kings, until 1918 when it became the property of the Republic. Previously it was owned by the royal families of the Přemyslids, Luxemburgs, Jagiellons, Habsburgs, Habsburg-Lorraine. Twice in history it became the main residence of the Holy Roman Emperor, in the 14th century under Charles IV and in the 16th century under Rudolf II. It has been rebuilt and modified many times over the centuries. The last construction took place in the 18th century during the reign of Maria Theresa. We have 4 courtyards from different centuries and many historical buildings to visit. During our three-hour walk we will show you the whole castle complex and from the interior we will visit the St. Vitus Cathedral - the traditional place of coronation of Czech kings and their final resting place, the Old Royal Palace where the Czech crown jewels are kept, St. George's Basilica, the best preserved Romanesque building in Prague with the remains of the first Czech princes and the Golden Lane which is located between the wall of its northern fortification and the old purkrabstvo. These are houses built from the end of the 16th century into the niches of the wall and were inhabited until 1945. Prague Castle is considered a symbol not only of the city but also of Czech statehood.
